Filley enlisted on Jun 5, 1864 at Springfield, Clark County, OH in Company G, 4th Regiment (Reg) Ohio Volunteer Calvary (OVC).  He mustered in on Jan 6, 1864 at Columbus, Franklin County, OH.  He was promoted to Corporal, Company G, 4th Reg OVC, on Jun 1, 1864 (Atlanta Campaign). He was promoted to Quarter Master Sergeant, Company G, 4th Reg OVC, Nov 1, 1864 at Nashville, Davidson County, TN. He was promoted to Regimental Full Quarter Master Sergeant, 4th Reg OVC,  Jun 25, 1865 at Nashville, Davidson County, TN.
